An old soul spirit and natural people-connector, Lili Todd makes art that uplifts people and celebrates the poetic joys and messy feelings that come with being human. A creator of illustrated goods, books, comics, ceramics, and more, Lili creates objects meant to be gifted, cherished, and lived with.
Lili lives and works in Yucca Valley, California, where she shares a creative home with her husband, illustrator and designer Keiji Ishida. They share a property with her parents, Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson, two beloved figures in the illustration, comics, and art-education community. Together, they’ve created something that feels a little like a private artist’s commune, where they often host friends and have potlucks under the stars. The family only moved to Yucca Valley in 2025, after the January Los Angeles fires, but they’ve quickly fallen in love with their new desert home.
Oftentimes, Lili, Keiji, Mark, and Esther link arms and operate as a big octopus-like creature that tackles projects. Sharing, teaching, arguing, art-directing, giving feedback (both wanted and unwanted). And sometimes, her aunt and comedic genius artist Teresa Watson links arms with them and joins in on the wild ride.
Whether that is building a chicken coop from scratch or designing the branding and merch for their two desert-based family businesses - Hey There Projects gallery in Joshua Tree, and Get Lost Art Supply in 29 Palms - this family can’t help but be in each other's business. Literally.
Even in a family of overly opinionated creatives, Lili holds her own in her artwork. And what she has to offer through her work is so genuinely her. Her love of folk art and traditional craft gives her work a warm, inviting voice. A longtime zine-maker, Lili’s practice is influenced by the bright fluorescent colors of risograph printing and handmade goods.
But it is really Lili's old soul and inner-child that speaks strongest in her work. She believes in leading with positivity and searching for deep truths.
Bold, touching, playful, and empowering - Lili’s work is here to hold your hand through it all. The good days and the hard days. Because that’s what making the art is doing for her too!
